ISWAN Seminar 2018

Improving the wellbeing of seafarers: Working in partnership, seeking practical solutions

Hosted by ISWAN and the Finnish Seamen’s Service, the Seminar will take place at Helsinki University, Unioninkatu 40, Helsinki on 23 November 2018. It is a full day event open to all individuals concerned with providing seafarers with the highest standard of welfare services and facilities. Delegates and speakers will come from a number of different countries and from different sectors of the maritime industry: shipping companies, trade unions, welfare agencies, academia and government.

ISWAN has been supported in arranging this seminar by the following organisations who have given time, sponsorship or both, to make this happen: Alandia Marine, Bore, the Finnish Seafarers' Union, the Finnish Seamen's Mission, the Finnish Seamen’s Service, the Finnish Shipowners’ Association, the International Port Welfare Partnership Programme and Viking Line. ISWAN is very grateful for the support which makes possible the running of this event.

The one-day seminar will explore the work of partnership in:

  • Implementation of the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC) 2006
  • Removing obstacles to seafarers’ welfare
  • Health and wellbeing of seafarers
  • Supporting women in the maritime industry
  • Abandonment of seafarers
  • Increasing the effectiveness of port welfare
